Because
Honduras is one of the largest programs for Trees for the Future, we
have established a regional office for Central America in Siguatepeque.
TREES has been providing support to Peace Corps Volunteers working on
sustainable development projects within the country for over 10 years.
Our program, which is run in collaboration with our local Honduran
partners FundArbol, has distributed over 20 million seeds and has
planted over 10 million trees.
Our Project:
In
Honduras, we have several large projects 100,000 + projects with
agricultural cooperatives and a 3,000 nursery project with the healthy
schools program. But we also have several smaller projects with
individual producers and Peace Corps volunteers. Most of our current
work is focused on watershed protection
Current Status
January
is the time to establish nurseries in Honduras. We are currently
sending seed to Peace Corps volunteers and other participating groups
around the country. We are hoping to plant 3 million trees in Honduras
in 2009
Environmental Issues
Deforestation in the mountains is damaging aquifers' ability to absorb
water, which causes water shortages in population centers.
Social Issues
Because of past nationalization of forests and a misguided attempt to
protect forests, local people are not allowed, nor have interest in,
sustainably managing forests. This causes a spike in the value of
forest products, which causes more illegal unmanaged harvesting.

Our Response We
are helping local producers to plant useful products, i.e. fast growing
trees that will sustainably provide firewood or stakes for vegetable
production, as well as fruit trees and timber species. We are also
helping with documentation of these plantings so that in the future
these people will be allowed to harvest and manage these plantings.
